But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Acts 1:8
And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby), that He may remain with you forever--
John 14:16
The Amplified Bible
Jesus asked the Father to send Someone Who would be a Comforter, Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby. He sent Someone to help us when we’re in need. He sent the Parakletos, the Holy Spirit, also called the Holy Ghost to stand by our sides to help us. That’s what the Greek word “parakletos” means; one called along side to one’s aid.
Picture the best attorney in the world defending you. That’s the Holy Ghost. He’ll give you counsel, good counsel from God the Father. He’ll intercede on your behalf. That is, He’ll intervene, acting as a mediator to plead your case. He’ll stand right by your side, and give you strength when you need it. He’ll guide you along the way. He will even show you the outcome.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.
John 16:13
Here, the Holy Ghost is called the Spirit of truth. He guides us into all truth, especially the truth pertaining to Jesus. He said the Spirit of truth would testify of Him. He’ll be a witness for Him (John 15:26). No one has to be deceived or confused concerning the things of God, because the Spirit of truth will guide us into all truth.
This is a good thing. Jesus told the disciples it was to their benefit that He leaves, so He could send the Parakletos, or the Comforter. Remember, Jesus was sending Someone like Him. The things He did for His disciples, the Comforter would do for them. Whenever the disciples had a question regarding something Jesus said, He would clarify the matter. The Holy Spirit will do this for us.
Jesus showed His disciples things to come. He revealed to them concerning His death and resurrection. Throughout the Scriptures we see God reveal things to His servants. Generally, it was to the prophets (Amos 3:7). But the Spirit of truth will show us things to come. Just like the Holy Ghost spoke to Paul, letting him know what he would encounter on his journeys (Acts 20:23; 21:11).
It’s to our benefit to receive the Holy Ghost. When we receive Him, our fellowship and communion with God strengthens. Jesus had many disciples, but there was an inner circle of disciples. These disciples received special teachings and guidance. The Holy Ghost will do this for us.
