But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Acts 1:8
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
John 14:16-17
Jesus told His disciples, He was going to ask the Father to send another Comforter. The Comforter was going to dwell with them and be in them. He infers by using the word “another” that the Father was sending Someone like Him. The Comforter is the Holy Spirit (John 14:26). He is the Spirit or the living God. The Father sends Him so that we can have Someone like Jesus with us all the time. Thank You Father!
Like the Lord Jesus, it would probably be impossible to exhaust the teaching on the Holy Spirit. We see Him at the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth. The Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters (Genesis 1:2). We see Him at the end when the Spirit and the bride said “come” (Revelations 22:17). His role is very important in the life of the Believer, and every Believer should receive Him.
Jesus asked the Father to send the Comforter, but He’s much more than Someone Who provides comfort and consolation. He does do that, but He has a role that is far greater. The whole meaning of the Greek word for Comforter; Parakletos, gives a good idea of some of the things He does in the Christian’s life. He’s Someone Who’s called alongside to help. The Amplified Bible expresses it in it’s translation of John 14:16.
And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby), that He may remain with you forever--
John 14:16-17
Jesus asked the Father to send Someone Who would be a Comforter, Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby. This is the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Christian.
In the United States, if an accused person isn’t able to provide legal counsel for himself, he’s appointed a public defender. That person is called to stand by his side to help him. The public defender is supposed to counsel their client. He intervenes, acting as a mediator. This describes an intercessor. He pleads the cause of his client. Jesus said He was going to pray that the Father would send you this type of person. He’s called the Holy Spirit, and sometimes the Holy Ghost.
Do you need Someone to stand by your side to help you? Do you sometimes need counsel? Do you need Someone to intervene on your behalf? Receive that Someone today.
