Forgiving and Prayer

And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have aught against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
Mark 11:22-26

Sin will stop the blessings of God from operating in your life. Unforgiveness is a sin. It’s one of those sins that many people practice. Then they wonder why their prayers aren’t being answered. Sin hinders answered prayer. This passage of Scripture shows us a connection between prayer and forgiveness. Verses 22 – 24 gives an example of how faith in prayer works. But notice verse 25 begins with the word “and”. It’s obviously connected with the previous verses because “and” is a conjunction.

Jesus said you must forgive anyone who has done anything against you. That’s hard for some. It’s understandable because some people have had terrible things done to them. But they still have to forgive, that is, if they want God to forgive them of their sins. It’s a commandment of the Lord.

Consider this. God sent Jesus for each and every person born into this world. Jesus died for each and every person born into this world. He’s Savior of the world, not a select few, but the whole world (1 John 4:14). Through Jesus, we have redemption and the forgiveness of sins. This is available for all. Even the person who acted horribly to you. Even if they did unspeakable things to you. If they turn to the Lord and ask for forgiveness, it will be granted them. If God is willing to forgive them, then we should too.

It’s not worth sacrificing peace with God by harboring unforgiveness in your heart. Jesus gave a parable in Matthew 18:23-35 concerning this. Basically, He’s saying what we owe God is much more significant than what any man may owe us. He concluded it with this:

So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.
Matthew 18:35

“And when you stand praying, forgive if you have aught against any.” Be certain your heart is right with God and man.
