Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15
Luke 8:11-15 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.
Luke 8:11-15
This passage is a parable or allegory on the Word of God. When the Word of God is received and kept, it will produce fruit. God told the children of Israel that if they would “hearken diligently” to His voice or His commandments, they would be blessed in every area of their lives (Deuteronomy 11 and 14). They were to “hearken diligently” or to receive the commandments and keep them.
Joshua, like the children of Israel received the commandments and laws of God by Moses. He spent years under his leadership. After the death of Moses, God gave him an awesome assignment. He told him to lead the children of Israel into the promise land. He also gave him a word that was key to his success.
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success [or, do wisely].
Joshua 1:8
The Word of God is the main way God leads us. In order for it to produce the blessings of God in our lives, we must receive it, believe it, and do it. Meditating on the Word of God will produce faith on the Word of God. And doing the Word of God will produce the blessings of God. James said this person will be blessed in what he does (James 1:25).
However, there’s something between hearing the Word of God and doing the Word of God. It’s faith. We must believe it. People operate according to what they believe. Many did not enter the promise land because of unbelief.
Faith in God and His Word is key to a life full of the blessings of God. So the devil will try you. What he’s doing is testing your faith. Some people hear the Word and forget it before they have time to believe it (Luke 8:12). Others let temptation stop the Word (vs. 13). While another group let cares and riches and pleasures of life stop the blessings associated with the Word. Then there are those who with an honest and good heart, hear the Word, believe it, and do it. These bring forth fruit and are successful. James understood this.
My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
2 Chronicles 26:5
We must allow faith in God and his Word to come to perfection or completion. The devil will send obstacles to stop your faith. For those who don’t know God’s Word, it’s easy. For those who know the Word of God, he’ll send temptations, afflictions, cares, deceitful riches, and pleasures to distract from the Word. When this happens, faith wanes or even stops, which produces little or no fruit.
Let's endeavor to do it God's way. Study His Word. Do His Word. And God promises to give success in whatever a person does.
But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
Psalms 1:2-3
